According to a report by KTVH, Donald Trump’s campaign plane made an emergency landing in Billings, Montana, on Friday afternoon.
Videos and photos from the scene showed the plane taxiing after it landed.
The airport in Billings confirmed that Trump’s plane made the emergency landing due to a mechanical issue.
Trump is expected to board a private plane and go to the Bozeman Airport. The US Secret Service is currently conducting a thorough search of the facility before the event.
The presidential candidate’s safety and security have been the subject of much concern following an assassination attempt on July 13.
Former US Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle resigned from her position in July following a contentious congressional hearing, where she was accused of dereliction and allowing an assassination attempt on Trump. In an interview days after the incident, she refused to resign.
Trump was hit by a bullet while he was speaking at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
The shooting incident became a national issue and prompted a debate about the state of politics and the security of presidential candidates.
The steady stream of revelations about the Secret Service’s actions during the campaign contributed to the decision for Cheatle to leave.
Multiple news outlets reported last week that the Secret Service had rejected numerous requests to provide additional security to Donald Trump due to the threats he had received.
During a hearing in July, Cheatle tried to deflect questions about the number of requests she had denied. She also noted that the agency usually relies on local law enforcers to provide additional coverage during the presidential election season.
Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri became the first to report that the US Secret Service had employed personnel who were not trained to provide security for Trump.
In July, Grassley released evidence that indicated that the agency had deployed several officers and other personnel to protect Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
During the same event, the visit of Jill Biden to Pittsburgh attracted 12 Secret Service personnel.
The disclosure was made as part of Senator Grassley’s investigation into the agency’s operations regarding the security of both Trump and Biden.
The senator is also looking into how the Secret Service collaborated with local law enforcers in Butler to set up a protective presence at the rally.
During the hearing, a Secret Service representative and Cheatle maintained that the area was under local law enforcement’s protection.
However, she noted that the gunman’s shooting position was outside the area.
Legislators are now trying to understand why an agent was not allowed to enter the building due to its sloped roof, which she said would have prevented them from properly monitoring Trump.
