Hannah Kobayashi Found Safe After Month-Long Disappearance

After weeks of searching and worrying, Hannah Kobayashi’s family has finally received the news they’ve been longing to hear: she’s been found safe.

The 30-year-old photographer from Hawaii had been reported missing on November 11 after failing to make a connecting flight in Los Angeles bound for New York City.

A Voluntary Disappearance?

Police initially labeled Hannah’s disappearance as “voluntary,” which sparked concerns and raised questions about her safety. Her family, however, has always maintained that something was amiss and that Hannah would never willingly leave without a trace.

“We are incredibly relieved and grateful that Hannah has been found safe,” her sister and mother, Sydni Kobayashi and Brandi Yee, said in a statement. “This past month has been an unimaginable ordeal for our family, and we kindly ask for privacy as we take the time to heal and process everything we have been through.”

The Search Effort

Hannah’s family was determined to find her, and their efforts gained national attention. Her aunt, Larie Pidgeon, expressed her fears, saying, “We’re terrified. We’re really afraid.” Sydni added, “I think the thing that we fear the most is you hear all of these stories of trafficking and women that travel alone, they get drugged or — just some random person can come up and take advantage of them, so that’s our biggest fear.”

Tragically, during the search, Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, died by suicide in Los Angeles on November 24. Hannah’s aunt described his passing as a “broken heart.”

Break in the Case

A breakthrough in the case came on December 1 when authorities reviewed video at the southern border showing Hannah entering Tijuana alone and not under visible distress. However, her family challenged this determination, saying they would launch their own search.

Investigation Conclusions

The Los Angeles police have stood by their investigation, stating that they have found no evidence of foul play or human trafficking. Police Chief Jim McDonnell said, “To date, the investigation has not uncovered any evidence that Kobayashi is being trafficked or is the victim of foul play. She’s also not a suspect in any criminal activity.”

Next Steps

Hannah’s family has expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received and has asked for privacy as they process this ordeal. The Los Angeles police have also stated that they will not compel Hannah to speak to them, but they hope she will reach out to let them know she’s safe.
