The woman’s condition is currently unknown, but it is understood she is receiving treatment for her injuries.

One witness, Julia Dorrestyn, described her close call with the out-of-control SUV just minutes before the crash. “I was in the right lane, they were in the right lane just in the wrong direction,” she told 7NEWS.

“I had a last-minute panic, I beeped the horn and then I had to hit the brakes and pull in behind a truck beside me to get out of the way.

It was terrifying, just confusion.”

Major crash investigators closed the highway for most of the day as they worked to determine the cause of the crash. Witnesses reported stopping at the scene to help before paramedics arrived, with one describing the scene as “shocking and disbelief that that’s occurred.”
