According to authorities, a 10-year-old boy named Dakota Stevens was allegedly killed by his foster mother on April 25 in Indiana.
He had asked his neighbor to adopt him moments before he died.
According to court documents obtained by CBS Chicago, NBC Chicago, and WGN, the boy died due to a medical emergency.
Dakota’s foster mother, Jennifer Wilson, 48, was wanted by the authorities for homicide.
On July 13, she was arrested in Michigan. The sheriff’s office of the county where she was taken into custody confirmed that Wilson was apprehended.
She was being held on a fugitive justice warrant.
According to court records, the charges against Wilson in Indiana are pending, and she has not entered a plea.
The police stated that Dakota had bruising on his chest and neck, and that he had been lying on top of Wilson for about five minutes before he stopped moving.
According to the affidavit, Wilson admitted that she hit the boy.
The police also viewed the footage from the home’s Ring camera.
According to reports, Wilson could be heard saying that she hit Dakota because he was acting poorly.
Around 30 minutes before emergency responders arrived at her home, Dakota went to his neighbor’s house and asked to be adopted.
According to the report, Dakota asked his neighbor to take him in, as his parents reportedly would hit him.
Upon arrival, Wilson reportedly found the boy’s neighbor unaware of any injuries on him.
NBC reported that the cause of death was mechanical asphyxia, and the manner of death had been classified as homicide.
