Social Media Left Confused as Anya Taylor-joy Is Described as a ‘Woman of Color’ Following Award Win

Following Anya Taylor-Joy’s Golden Globe win, which was for her performance in “The Queen’s Gambit,” industry publication Variety issued a correction.

The actress, who was born in Florida and is a white Latina, was mistakenly called a woman of color.

The article that was published by Variety called Taylor-Joy a person of color.

However, it didn’t refer to her as a white Latina.

Social media users criticized the article, as it didn’t reflect on how she identified herself.

Taylor-Joy is the first person of color to win the award since Queen Latifah in 2008.

Other past recipients of the award include Alfre Woodard, Sé Epatha Merkerson, and Halle Berry.

Writer Valerie Complex criticized the article on Twitter. It also stated that Taylor-Joy was the first woman of color to win an award in this category.

Following the outcry, Variety issued a correction, stating that the article should reflect Taylor-Joy’s ancestry.

In November 2020, she recorded a video for Netflix’s “Con Todo” account in Spanish.

She also noted that she doesn’t want to be a character that someone can just sub for.
