Hospital Apologizes for Chick-fil-A Lunch After Staff Complaints

A Minnesota hospital recently found itself in a bit of a pickle—not over medical issues, but over chicken sandwiches! Essentia Health in Duluth issued an apology to its staff after providing a free Chick-fil-A lunch, which ruffled some feathers among employees.

Staff Voices Concerns Over Chick-fil-A Lunch

Last Tuesday, Essentia Health treated its staff at St. Mary’s Medical Center to free Chick-fil-A sandwiches in the hospital atrium. What was meant to be a kind gesture quickly turned controversial when some employees expressed their discomfort and offense over the choice of restaurant.

“We have received feedback from some colleagues who were concerned or offended by this occurrence, and we value colleagues feeling comfortable expressing their reservations,” wrote Tammy Kritzer, Senior Vice President for Regional Operations at Essentia Health, in an email to the medical staff.

Apology Acknowledges Inclusivity and Respect

In the email obtained by The Daily Wire, Kritzer extended gratitude to those who spoke up, emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to inclusivity.

“We would like to thank our colleagues who had the courage to speak up to widen our lens of inclusivity, and we appreciate all colleagues continuing to live our values of respect and justice,” she wrote.

Chick-fil-A’s Controversial History with LGBTQ+ Activists

Chick-fil-A has been under fire from LGBTQ+ activists over the years. The fast-food chain faced boycotts and protests due to donations to groups like the Salvation Army, which some activists claim have a history of anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination.

Despite the backlash, Chick-fil-A emphasizes that it “values diversity, equity and inclusion” and does not discriminate or tolerate harassment based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Hospital Clarifies Its Intentions

Essentia Health made it clear that providing Chick-fil-A was not an endorsement of the company’s practices.

“The free lunch was not intended to endorse a business or business practices,” the email stated. “We respect all we are honored to serve and employ, and situations such as these are an important reminder to consider all viewpoints.”

The email continued, “As we strive to be thoughtful and inclusive as an organization, we will have learnings along the way.”

A Learning Moment Inspired by Maya Angelou

Kritzer concluded the email with a thoughtful reflection, quoting the renowned poet Maya Angelou: “In the words of Maya Angelou, when we know better, we do better.”

She added, “Thank you for giving us grace, as we work to be better, together.”

Chick-fil-A’s Challenges in Other Cities

This incident isn’t isolated. Cities like Buffalo, New York, and San Antonio, Texas, have prevented Chick-fil-A from opening locations in their airports due to similar controversies.

Known for closing on Sundays to honor the founder’s Christian beliefs, Chick-fil-A reportedly forgoes more than $1 billion in potential annual sales because of this practice.

Silence on Other Controversial Services

While employees were vocal about the Chick-fil-A lunch, there’s been little public outcry regarding some of Essentia Health’s own practices. Reports indicate that the hospital provides cross-sex hormones and related treatments to minors. According to the Stop The Harm database, Essentia has performed at least five gender-affirming surgeries on minors.

The hospital did not respond to requests for comment on these services.

Striving for Inclusivity in All Areas

The incident highlights the complexities organizations face in balancing inclusivity, employee values, and organizational practices. It serves as a reminder of the importance of open communication and the need to consider all perspectives within a diverse workforce.
