One child has reportedly died and several others were injured after a vehicle crashed into a school in Melbourne’s inner east on Tuesday afternoon.
Ambulance Victoria was called to the Auburn South Primary School in Tooronga Rd, Hawthorn East, following reports of a crash.
According to police, the white SUV was traveling on Burgess St when it crashed into the school’s fence at around 2.30 pm.
An 11-year-old student was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but he later died.
A number of other children, including two 11-year-old girl and a ten-year old boy, were taken to a nearby hospital with severe injuries.
The incident is currently being investigated by the Major Collision Investigators.
A female driver of the vehicle was apprehended and is being interviewed by the police.
On Tuesday afternoon, Craig McEvoy, from the MCIU, said that initial investigations revealed that the woman, who was 40 years old at the time of the incident, went to the school to collect her kid.
She then allegedly performed a U-turn and crashed into the school’s gate.
The incident appeared to be a tragic accident, and police were still at the scene collecting statements.
Inspector McEvoy said it was a challenging scene, especially when children were involved. The police were also not able to confirm if the driver, who was reportedly a P-plater, was charged.
It’s unclear whether the woman suffered a medical episode.
According to Inspector McEvoy, Auburn South Primary School has been closed and all parents were notified.
