  • The administration has offered to share classified details with the judge, but only in a private setting
  • The project, estimated to cost $300 million, has sparked widespread criticism from historic preservation and architectural communities

The Trump administration has ignited a firestorm by claiming that the construction of a lavish new ballroom at the White House is a matter of national security. In a shocking court filing, the administration refused to halt the project, despite a lawsuit filed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The lawsuit, which was filed last Friday, seeks to block the project until it undergoes multiple independent reviews and wins approval from Congress. But the administration is having none of it, insisting that the project must continue in order to meet the “safety and security requirements” of the U.S. Secret Service.

In a declaration filed with the court, the deputy director of the U.S. Secret Service claimed that more work on the site of the former East Wing is still needed to ensure the safety of the President and his family. The administration has offered to share classified details with the judge, but only in a private setting – a move that has been slammed as ” secretive” and “undemocratic” by critics.

The project, which has been estimated to cost a staggering $300 million, has sparked widespread criticism from historic preservation and architectural communities. Trump’s decision to tear down the East Wing in October has been branded as “cultural vandalism” by many, who argue that the building was a vital part of American history.

Despite the backlash, the administration is pushing ahead with the project, which is expected to be completed by 2029. But the National Trust for Historic Preservation is refusing to back down, and a hearing in the case was scheduled for Tuesday in federal court in Washington.

In a statement, the National Trust for Historic Preservation slammed the administration’s claims of national security, saying that they were “nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to justify a massive and unnecessary construction project”. The group vowed to continue fighting the project, saying that it was “determined to protect the historic integrity of the White House”.
