In a shocking and brazen attack, a mother’s kindness was brutally exploited on a rural highway, leaving her seven-month-old baby abandoned and alone on the side of the road.
The 36-year-old woman had pulled over to assist a 51-year-old man, who had flagged her down on the Murray Valley Highway on the outskirts of Swan Hill, only to be carjacked and left shaken.
According to police, the incident occurred about 11.10am on Wednesday, when the mother stopped her Holden Commodore to help the man. However, a struggle broke out, and the man allegedly stole the car with the baby inside.
The woman, who suffered minor injuries, was left on the side of the road as the car sped away.
The community was left reeling when the baby was discovered by a passerby a short distance away from the scene. The infant was uninjured, but the mother was taken to hospital for treatment.
The car was later found abandoned in bushland about 12km away.

He is also facing child stealing and unlawful assault charges. The man has been remanded to appear at Mildura Magistrates’ Court on December 2.
